Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be quite complicated. Beginners oftentimes get overwhelmed because of the many technical terms and terminologies used by SEO folks. If you are a beginner in this industry, take a look at these five important terms that you will most likely encounter along the way.

SERP

SERP is short for Search Engine Results Page. It is the page shown when you key in a search term or phrase in a search engine like Google, Yahoo! or Bing. In other words, it is the page that shows the results of your query. One of the goals of SEO is for a webpage to appear on the SERPs particularly on the top spots.

Keyword

Using the example above, keyword is the word or phrase that you type into the search box of the search engine. Keyword plays a big role in SEO because it is an element that must be properly incorporated in content and other aspects of the optimization process. Note that keyword stuffing or too much use of keywords is not a good SEO practice.

Title tag

A title tag is an important part of a web page. Also known as the page title, SEO title, or meta title, it appears on both the SERPs and on the top part of your browser window when the page is opened. Title tags must be optimized with the right keyword and must be limited to 50 or 60 characters.

Links

Another important element in SEO, links are basically links to another website. In SEO, the more links your site receives from websites with high authority, the better your chances are in having a good rank on the SERPs. These are called inbound links or backlinks.

Traffic

Traffic pertains to the number of visitors your website receives during a certain period of time. Basically, the more traffic your site gets, the better. The ideal traffic, however, is one that comes from real people who are most likely to buy your product or service.
